About the band

Since 1992, WOVEN IMAGE has been bringing its blend of Celtic, folk, and jazz to audiences throughout California and beyond. Performing at churches, festivals and varied community events, they share their passion for peace and justice and for storytelling through songs of a variety of styles and instrumental pieces both inspired and virtuostic.

The core ensemble features Carole Parmeter Dyer (vocals), Tom Parmeter Dyer (piano and vocals), Larry & Lorrie Klevos (vocals), Sharon Edmondson (flute, vocals), David James (guitar, mandolin), Claudia Fitzpatrick (cello), Susan Rishik (violin) along with additional collaborations over the years.

Woven Image has released multiple recordings, including Songs of Hope and Healing (Volumes I–III), Let Peace Fill the Earth, and their self-titled album. They have performed widely throughout Northern and Southern California and the Central Valley.

How we got started

In 1997, Reverend Doctor Victor Luther Nakka, a Lutheran pastor from India, came to Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary as a research scholar for one year. Carole was studying for her Master of Divinity degree at the same time.

When Victor returned home, he wrote to Carole and Tom about the plight of the people living in the slums of Lenin Nagar who made up his parish. They are from the dalit (“untouchable”) caste and suffer from extreme poverty. The men work in the rock quarries and suffer from TB, ulcers and other diseases. Victor urged us to use our gifts to help his people.

The Woven Image Sewing Center was established in 1998 with funds from Trinity Lutheran’s Christmas concert in Oakland, where Carole was Minister of Music. With only four hundred dollars, five sewing machines were purchased along with materials for teaching. In 1999, more money was sent from the Christmas Concert and Woven Image concerts; teacher salaries were paid, and a school was started for the children. We have sent money every year since. A health clinic and nurse training program were added in 2005. In 2007, two more sewing centers were added and in 2008, a school principal and second pastor were hired. The name was changed to the Woven Image Sewing Institute and the centers also provided training in family management, health and hygiene. Unfortunately, the Woven Image Sewing Center closed around 2019 following Victor’s passing.

Woven Image continues to perform benefit concerts each year, supporting local communities and a variety of causes that are close to our heart.
